I was feeling ill and delivered my baby at twenty-four weeks into the hospital's toilet. My baby was put in an incubator and fed around the clock by a group of loving nurses that nicknamed my baby"sweet-pea." A small heart murmur...and some corrective braces were put on my baby's feet. Now my baby is forty-one, a mom of three and a nurse and teacher. She developed normally and had no learning issues or delays of any kind.

On May 19, 1987, Joseph came into this world 10 weeks premature. At first all
seemed to be going fairly well except that he was small. On day 10 on my visit
to the unit I was told that my baby had had a brain bleed. On a grade between 1
and 4 his was a grade 3. We were told to unplug him and let him go--I refused. Joseph was a very sick little boy, but after 2 months in the NICU, they were
able to put in a shunt. After 4 months of ups and downs, he went home. Joseph
will be 19 soon and other than being confined to a wheelchair, is a joy to be
around.

and cross country, and is on the high honor roll at school. It has been
amazing to us to see how God has helped her grow into such a healthy young lady.
She is still the shortest of the three standing at 5'3".

Zach was sick from the start. At 2 days old he had a grade 3 brain bleed, but it spread and was upgraded to a 4. We were told to decide if we wanted to hold our child as they turned the vent off, or if we wanted them to bring him to us to hold after he was gone. Praise God we refused to make that decision and left it in our Lord's hands! After lots of ups and downs, 4 eye surgeries and a 3 month stay in the hospital, we brought Zach home. Today, despite having some minor learning disabilities, Zach is a healthy, happy young man, and a living testimony to the power of prayer!

When Laura was born it was by emergency C-section due to placenta previa. We were told she would not come home for at least 6 weeks (when her due date was). We were extremely lucky with her--the only problem she had was the valve on her heart never had a chance to close. After she was given the medicine to close it she was out of the incubator and in an open bassinett. Two days later she was released. We were told she would be slow, and behind her classmates. Little did they know she would be in the GATE program, and gets great grades. She loves to play softball!

Ellis was "Baby A" - the firstborn of quadruplets. She faced a scary time the
night after her birth but recovered quickly. She had Retinopathy of Prematurity
Stage 3+ and underwent laser surgery to prevent blindness. She also had BPD, a
heart murmur, PDA, etc - all of which resolved on their own. Today she is in

diagnosed ADHD and is high functioning on the Autism Spectrum. We feel very

Madison was "Baby B" and the identical twin of Savannah, "Baby C." She was
strong and could have come off of her ventilator if she were not so tiny.
Madison developed sepsis and was taken very quickly - so quickly, in fact, that
the nurses could not recall a faster turnaround. She is survived by her 2
sisters and brother who are now 7 1/2 years old. Her identical sister has
cerebral palsy but is quite active in her power chair and is very bright. Our
beanie baby of choice was a little lamb given to us by friends. Madison is
buried in Savannah, Georgia and we nicknamed her "Little Bit."

Savannah was "Baby C" - out of a set of quadruplets and the identical twin of

2 brain bleed which resulted in PVL, causing her cerebral palsy. Today she is a
bright 7 1/2 year old who gets around nicely in her power wheelchair.
Cognitively she is as sharp as a tack. She was in the regular first grade
classroom but we just decided a few months ago to home school her. The regular

Shelby (baby D) was a fast starter, right on brother Bradley's heels. We were able to hold her on day 9, and she moved to the intermediate side of the nursery on day 19. She was the mover & shaker of the crew--we could hardly keep her in her incubator. We would have to open it very carefully, ready to catch her so she wouldn't fall out!!! She has not had issues stemming from being a preemie. She is so very smart and loves sports, cheerleading, and singing. The Lord has truly blessed us with our four little miracles.

Preston (Baby B) was much different then our other three: He was the largest and the sickest. He was put on the Jet Ventilator at day 3 and stayed at almost 100% oxygen for 3 weeks. There were two times we were told he would not make it. With a severe case of PIE, his left long had compressed his heart to the the right side of his body, with a quarter size area of clear lung left. His only hope was to rupture a lung. It did rupture, and the tube was placed successfully. He moved out of the NICU on day 27. He is doing GREAT, and has no issues related to being a preemie.

Although our NICU experience was relatively brief, my lack of understanding
about preemies made it scary; and though I tried to ask good questions, the
vague/incomprehensible answers never made sense. The same was true of her later
diagnosis of a “very mild case of the mildest form of CP”. Thankfully the CP is
mainly limited to her legs and, with hard work, in a few years she should be
free of the leg braces (AFO's) she now wears. My only advice is to remember that
God doesn’t make mistakes. Like Annie, who is a blessing to everyone around her,
we are all beautifully and wonderfully made.

surgeries wonderfully. He taught us about the true meaning of prayer. Carson was
diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension at 5 months old and passed away 6 weeks
later. He is the strongest person I have ever known. I thank God everyday he
chose me to be the mother of this wonderful child.

He was born due to placental abruption and we were given less than a 5% chance that he would survive. We almost lost him at 10 days old due to PIE and pneumothorax but he pulled through. He was vented for 99 days. He has had ROP, which cleared when he came home--he wears no glasses. He fought several infections and had 17 blood tranfusions during his NICU stay. He was a very sick little boy and we were not given much positive outlook but today he is a very healthy 3.5 yr old. The doctors are still amazed to this day of how he survived. You would never know he was so premature unless I told you.

Our precious little lady weighed only 1 lb and 13 ounces at birth. She is 2 years and 7 months old now. She has been diagnosed with CP, Epilepsy, BPD, ROP and has a feeding tube. We are getting a new wheel chair for her. She weighs 27 pounds. She doesn't walk, sit up or talk any words, but GIGGLE--what a beautiful sound. She growls at us to get our attention. She is a living breathing miracle and God has certainly blessed our family when he gave her to us. I like to tell people that if they do not believe in God then they should just look at a Preemie, and they will see his AWESOME ability.

I had Erik early due to severe pre-eclampsia and Erik's heart rate. After
the emergency c-section I wasn't able to see him for a full day due to my
condition. I waited that night to see him because I was so scared of what
I was about to see. When I saw him I cried--I guess I felt like it was in
some way my fault. You could see through his skin and he had tubes all
over him. After two weeks they said he had a downfall, and they didn't
think he was going to make it. But thankfully he recovered. The
nurses were great ,but they always prepared me for the worst, which sometimes
made me think about the negative things (would he make it? would he always need
oxygen? would he have other problems?). After 3.5 months he was able to come
home: no oxygen, no monitors, no tubes. I was very thankful.
He is now 2 years old and healthy--right where he should be.

day. She then moved to the CPAP for one day and then to nasal cannula. During
her 8 week stay in the NICU she developed a gastrointestinal virus. She had
blood in her stool and was watched to make sure she did not develop NEC. She did
receive a blood transfusion and antibiotics for her virus which was unknown. She
did well with feedings. She came home weighing 3lbs 8 oz and now weighs 24lbs at

My blood pressure reached a high of 195/110, my liver enzymes were very high and my platelet count was very low. Jack came out crying and right then I knew that he was going to make it. He weighed 15 ounces and was 11.5 inches long. He lost some weight and the lowest he was weighed at was 12 ounces. He spent 2 weeks on an oscillator, 3 months on a vent, 10 days on CPAP and came home on april 10 on nasal cannula. he is now 7 months old and weighs about 12 pounds. He had Stage 3 ROP that corrected itself and had bilateral hernia surgery before we left. Right now he is doing GREAT and is healthy. We are working with PT/OT to catch him up developmentally. He is a true miracle and amazes us everyday!!!!

Emily was Baby B of bggb quadruplets, and the smallest. She did incredibly well, and was put onto CPAP during week one. At 1 1/2 weeks, she acquired MRSA and became septic very quickly. She appeared to bounce back, but a few days later it was clear that the infection was still there and had spread throughout her body. After nineteen days, Emily went to be with the Lord, to the great sadness--and joy--of those who love her. We were blessed to be with her for those nineteen days, and we look forward to our reunion with her one day. A seahorse was by her side at all times, and is now buried with her--what we learned from loving her in those nineteen days is the inspiration for Project Seahorse!

Born at 30 weeks but the size of a 24-weeker due to IUGR. Doctors weren’t optimistic when they diagnosed us, believing it was a viral or chromosomal disorder and even hinted at terminating the pregnancy. Delivered via emergency C-section after 5 weeks of bedrest, he was ventilated for one week (self-extubated) then on CPAP, had 2 blood transfusions and hernia surgery. He did not have a lot of the problems that micro-preemies have. He came home right before Christmas and was 6 lbs. 10 oz. at 4 months old (and 18” long), on a feeding tube and apnea monitor. He is doing great and is our hero!

I started swelling and developed pre-eclampsia again. However, this time it did not go into HELLP syndrome. I was on bedrest for almost a month. His ultrasound before the delivery was barely at 5 lbs., so we were surprised when he came out weighing 6 lbs 2 oz. I was able to get the 2 steroid shots to help develop his lungs before he was born.
